The Super number is frequently mistaken for a measure of quality, yet it serves as a precise technical grading of the wool fibre itself.

To hold a length of Super 150s wool is to feel the result of two centuries of selective breeding and industrial refinement. While many perceive the number on a bunch of cloth as a simple hierarchy of merit, it is a specific unit of measurement derived from the diameter of individual wool fibres. Notably, a Super 100s wool fibre measures approximately 18.75 microns in diameter; for context, a human hair is roughly 75 microns. This means the wool used in a high-grade suit is four times finer than the hair on one's head, transforming raw fleece into a fabric with a remarkable handle.

The Bradford counting system

This nomenclature originated in the industrial heart of nineteenth-century Yorkshire. In the wool exchange of Bradford, merchants developed a system based on how many hanks of yarn—each 560 yards (512 metres) long—could be spun from one pound (0.45 kilograms) of clean, combed wool. A wool that could produce 80 hanks was graded as 80s. This standard remained until the mid-twentieth century, when technological advancements in spinning allowed for finer yields. In 1966, the Huddersfield mill Joseph Lumb & Sons, working with the Scottish weaver Reid & Taylor, produced a cloth so fine it surpassed existing scales. They branded it "Super 100s," establishing the terminology that defines the industry today.

Microns and the loom

The modern International Wool Textile Organisation has since codified these numbers to ensure transparency. The "Super" designation is now strictly tied to the maximum fibre diameter, measured in microns—a unit of one-thousandth of a millimetre (0.000039 inches). Super 100s must be 18.75 microns or finer; Super 120s must be 17.75 microns; and by the time one reaches Super 200s, the fibres are a mere 13.5 microns. As the number increases, the fibres become thinner, allowing more of them to be packed into a single yarn. The standard width for these cloths remains 150 centimetres (approximately 59 inches). This density creates a cloth with a pronounced natural lustre and a softer, more fluid drape.
